Creating comfort for pediatric patients with 3D-printed seats
Ensuring that seating solutions are comfortable, supportive, and adaptable in pediatric healthcare is essential. Eleftherios Samiotis, CEO of Ortholife, has introduced an innovative approach using 3D printing technology to design and produce pediatric seats. This technology has already significantly impacted the lives of over 30 young patients, providing them with better comfort and support tailored to their specific needs.
Why 3D-printed seating?
The decision to use 3D printing for pediatric seats was based on several key factors:
- Heat management: Traditional seating options often cause discomfort due to high temperatures. The 3D-printed seats offer better breathability, helping to keep children cool.
- Incontinence and washability: Many young patients struggle with incontinence. The 3D-printed seats are easy to wash, ensuring hygiene and convenience for children and caregivers.
- Breathability: Enhanced airflow in the seats helps maintain a cooler and more comfortable experience for the children.
Additional benefits
The 3D-printed seats also offer other important advantages:
- Multi-hardness implementation: Different parts of the seat can have varying firmness levels, providing customized support where it’s needed most.
- Support and shock absorption: The seat’s tailored structure improves support and absorbs shocks, making it more comfortable for the child.
Trial and feedback
A notable trial involved fitting a 3D-printed seat for a child with severe spastic pelvis and hip joint dislocation. Additional components like pelvic straps, a thoracic belt, and foot straps were added to ensure stability and correct positioning. After just ten days of use, the initial feedback from families has been very positive.
“The positive feedback we receive from the families after the first 10 days of use is the success criteria,” says Eleftherios Samiotis, CEO of Ortholife.
Innovation in action
The seats are printed in Athens using the Create it REAL Seatmaker, demonstrating how advanced technology and local expertise can work together to solve complex healthcare challenges. This initiative highlights the potential of 3D printing in medical applications and shows Ortholife’s commitment to improving pediatric patient care through innovation.
By addressing the specific needs of pediatric patients and using cutting-edge technology, Ortholife and Eleftherios Samiotis are setting new standards in pediatric seating solutions, bringing comfort and relief to young patients and their families.
